Introduce us to you and your brand!
I am a textile designer and an art enthusiast. Printing is my passion and 3 years ago I turned my passion to my work by setting up my company Spring feathers Limited. Here at Spring feathers, I believe that your home reflects YOU! And what other way is better than decorating your home in your style?
Spring for me is fresh start and Feathers represent a flight of freedom..! I provide the option of bespoke homeware products for anyone looking to add that extra touch uniqueness to their homes with the freedom of designing it their way.
My studio is based in Edinburgh and I offer large range of bespoke lighting from domestic Lampshades to large commercial Lampshades.
How has your brand/work developed since you began?
I started with holding workshops/print classes before attending country fairs and setting up my first website! Fast forward 3 years, I have expanded my product range and Spring Feathers has grown into a brand well know for its lighting with many happy customers coming back with repeat orders!
What do you consider to be your most popular product?
Everyone loves Maps! Lampshades with map prints and matching cushion covers are one of my most popular products.
What piece are you the proudest of?
Hand screen printed Hessian Lampshades. These are unique to Spring Feathers designing and are also environment friendly! Fabric I use for these Lampshades is recycled from Hessian sacks that were previously used for storage and the colours used for printing are water soluble eco friendly fabric paints.
Do you have any new Christmas products you are launching this year?
Yes I have got some new Christmas themed Lampshades, Tables runners and matching Cushion covers.
What would you consider to be the most challenging aspect about being a working artist/designer?
For a self-employed artist \ designer working for business under time constraints can sometimes feel challenging.
Do you have any past accomplishments you wish to share?
I completed my Textile degree with distinction and have worked in India’s top most Fabric export companies. I have first hand experience of working in fabric mills and learned block printing techniques from the printers who have been in the business from generations.
It was a great experience to be a part of design team developing a range of products for brands like Monsoon and M&S.
How did you find out about SDX? And what made you apply to sell with us?
One of my students from print class told me about SDX. At that time I was only selling my products online and to sell them in a shop had always been in my mind. So that was it! I approached SDX and that’s how my journey with them began!
What have you found to be the most challenging aspect to your business since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020?
I'm not a technical person and to organise my workshops through Zoom sessions was never easy!
What do you hope to gain from working with SDX going forward?
Going forward with SDX I hope to grow my brand visibility and reach new audiences. The positive customer feedback that I get here is also very important for me.
If you could share just one piece of advice to aspiring artists/designers who want to make a living from their creative talents, what would you tell them?
Lasting success requires artist/designers to keep asking tough questions about where they want to go and whether the track they are on will take them there?
If you want to make living from your creative talents you need to follow the right track if its not leading you where you want to go then maybe its time to apply new strategises !
And finally, help share some motivation with your favourite inspirational advise or quote!
The special touch of uniqueness that you and ONLY you can add to your work, is most important aspect of your design\product!
“Your skill is your product’s selling point!”
Thank you to Nagma for taking part in our blog. You can find her work in our Edinburgh George Street shop and online!
