Last Friday, the 18th November, was the second annual Cyrenians Charity Cook-Off and auction. The Cyrenians, if you don't know are an independent charity that supports people excluded from family, home, work or community on their life journey.

The event, which aimed to raise £18,000 for the charity, was supported by many local and national businesses, some of whom attended and some of whom donated prizes for the auction.

Leading up to the event, the artists and designers who exhibit in the Design Exchange were asked to consider donating items for the charity auction, and the response was excellent.

Now the event has passed we are delighted to say that the corporate guests and others in attendance did their bit and bought the works of art on offer!

When I was speaking to glassmaker Ann Aitchison of Glowing Glass last week, she told me how happy she was to be involved. "Not only can we raise money for a great cause through our work as artists," she told me, "but we can see our work going places it might not otherwise be. It is a delight to be involved and the Cyrenians is a great charity to support."

Ann's two glass decorations, pictured at the head of the article, were bought in the auction for £50. Some other works by SDX artists which sold well included the following:

This cushion from Dwelling Bird sold well and was much admired.

This print of Princes Street by Diana Savova sold for nearly £400.

This picture of the Bass Rock by Judy also fetched nearly £400, after a fierce bidding war!

We were pleased that this little guy from June Weaver also found a home!

The delightful 'fascinator' retro hat by Michelle Watson sold in the silent auction.

Sculptor Paul Cowan caused a sensation on the night with his R2D2 chiminea / stove which raised nearly £500.

Ever popular, Edinburgh Sketcher donated this drawing of the Old Town, which raised £200.

And finally, our very own Sean Casey donated this cheeky squirrel, which also sold well.

We would like to thank all the artists and designers who donated work to this auction; as you can see it was mission accomplished and combined, these designers were able to make a substantial difference to the total raised on the night.
